Many numbers can be used to tell the stories of war. Almost 3,500 Americans dead in Iraq and Afghanistan. Some 24,000 injured servicemen and women. Other numbers are subject to their own skirmishes: estimates of the number of civilian Iraqi dead are hotly contested and range from tens of thousands to half a million. Every number tells a story.
