Carbon tax: France may become the first major European economy to introduce a carbon tax, after President Nicolas Sarkozy announced on 10 September that he plans to implement a levy, from 2010, on activities emitting substantial amounts of carbon dioxide. Petrol, diesel, coal and natural gas would cost an extra € 17 (US$25) per tonne of carbon dioxide emitted. Sarkozy also suggested that a carbon tax could be put on imports.
