Coming home to Tsukuba

While a graduate student at the University of Tsukuba institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Masashi Yanagisawa discovered endothelin, a potent vasoconstrictor hormone secreted by cells of the inner lining of blood vessels. The paper he published on the finding in 1988 brought him instant fame and has since been cited more than 9,000 times. After many years in the United States, he is now setting up a second lab at the University of Tsukuba with an ambitious new research target in mind.
