The hurricane season has definitely arrived. Torrential rain, flash floods and 140 km h~(-1) winds left a trail of destruction along the east coast of the United States this week. Irene (pictured) may have been downgraded from hurricane status to a category 1 storm by the time it made landfall in North Carolina, but it still left millions without power and caused more than 40 deaths as it moved northwards. Irene was the ninth named storm of the season; forecasters predict up to 19 this year.
