President Barack Obama conjured up that improbable image in the spring of 2011 to help students at Georgetown University, Washington DC, grasp why biofuels deserve a starring role in his energy strategy. Just the week before, a US Air Force pilot had throttled a fighter jet up to one and a half times the speed of sound on a 50/50 blend of petroleum-based fuel and biofuel from Camelina sativa, an inedible cousin of the mustard plant — powerful evidence, claimed Obama, that biofuels could help the country kick its oil habit.
