Metabolic disease reversed by IL-22

Interleukin-22 (IL-22) promotes antimicrobial immunity and maintains the integrity of the intestinal mucosal barrier. This study examines the connection between IL-22 and metabolic syndromes, and shows that the IL-22 pathway is indispensable for maintaining epithelial integrity, reducing chronic inflammation and alleviating metabolic syndromes in mouse models of genetic or diet induced obesity. Administration of IL-22 reverses disease progression through multiple pathways, suggesting novel therapeutic strategies for human metabolic diseases.
