China joins ivory-crushing campaign

Chinas government crushed more than six tonnes of seized ivory in Dongguan on 6 January, as part of a global effort to crack down on illegal trading in smuggled tusks and carvings. The move was Chinas first public destruction of ivory, showing the country's intention to thwart a worrying rise in elephant poaching (see Nature 503,452; 2013).
