INSIDE VIEW: THE JACKSON LABORATORY

The Jackson Laboratory was founded in 1929 to study mouse and mammalian genetics and to act as a repository for mice for medical research. Last year, the Bar Harbor, Maine-based research institution opened The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine in Farmington, Connecticut to focus on medical applications of genomics with academic and clinical research partners from around the world. Nature talked with Walter Ausserer, who leads The Jackson Laboratory's In Vivo Pharmacology and Clinical Genomics businesses, about new humanized mouse models that can be used for researching immuno-oncology and infectious disease. A bioanalytical chemist by training, prior to joining The Jackson Laboratory last year, Ausserer held senior positions at leading bioanalytical technology companies, including Caliper Life Sciences, ForteBio and ProteinSimple.
