Portland quarry to become cultural landscape

A ground-breaking project is underway on the Dorset island of Portland, from where the famous limestone comes, to transform Albion Stone's Independent Quarry into a new cultural landscape when work ends there in 2005. Portland is part of the Jurassic Coast, the UK's first World Heritage Site based on natural elements. The project in the quarry is being run by Portland Sculpture & Quarry Trust, which has been awarded funding from the Minerals Industry Sustainable Technology programme of the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).
