Jane's desert hike raises ￡4,385 for cancer support

When they said it was a challenge and nn-one ever goes into [he desert and emerges the same person I was privately sceptical on both counts. But I was wrong. My trck to raise money for the Macmillan cancer support charily started as a tribute to my father who died from cancer a few years ago. The Macmillan nurses were such a support to both him and my mother thai I was determined to do something to say thank you. So I jumped at thit opportunity to help them. We covered 101km in six days, three of them in sand storms, which made walking difficult and visibility poor. I unfortunately won the prize for the most blisters with a grand total of 18! Food was b;tsic and digested with a lot of sand and some flies, although after a daily average of 21 km trekking in 40℃ you can gel used to anything. Washing was non existent, although an attempt to keep clean involved the liberal use of wet wipes. Sanitation was a hole in the ground.
