Kings & scribes theme fires the imaginations of the stone carvers in Winchester

The second of this year's major stone festivals was held in the Saxon capital of Winchester, in the grounds of Winchester Cathedral. At the entrance to the town stands a statue of the 9~(th) century King, Alfred the Great. Displayed inside the Cathedral is the Winchester Bible, the largest and finest of surviving 12~(th) century English bibles.
