News Corp Australia developed the PeopleSafe system to protect the work health and safety (WHS) of its 6500 employees, including those in operations, logistics, editorial and sports broadcasting. This one system replaced 23 systems and allowed News Corp to upgrade its self-insurance licence from 'watch' status to a three-year licence. News Corp employees face numerous and varied risks, such as operating complex machinery; driving long distances in the company's 340 fleet vehicles to report on the news or driving 1.1 million kilometres per week delivering newspapers; wars, bushflres, floods, cyclones and other hostile environments; and hazardous chemicals. One of the successful PeopleSafe programs has been the Industrial Athlete Program pilot. Under this pilot, the risk profile of 84 photographers declined, so only 15 per cent of photographers were rated high-risk post-pilot compared with 42 per cent pre-pilot. The pilot has now been extended to News Corp's Print Centre Staff.
