The association has strongly supported Yellow Ribbon since its inception but continues to seek program improvements. One enhancement NGAUS championed was the codification of the transition assistance advisor program in the fiscal 2013 National Defense Authorization Act. The association continues to advocate a four- to five-day "soft-landing" Yellow Ribbon seminar at home station as the final phase of demobilization. This would bring troops and families together for reintegration briefings and provide a final opportunity to identify and document injuries and wounds that too often are not identified or are not properly documented elsewhere. Guardsmen and Reservists are denied Department of Veterans Affairs disability claims at four times the rate of active-component troop. Gaps in medical records are the reasons most often cited by the VA.
