Multicultural Education: Tough Conversations, Questions, and Realities

School districts and educators have an obligation to afford all students equal access to education no matter the provenance of a child's family tree, the economic status that holds them together, the gender identity that defines the soul, the religion he or she embraces, or their sexuality. Our students, the children and families we serve, are reflective of the social justice issues of the current times. Creating opportunities for all students to access education requires the acknowledgment of differences and a safe place to engage in critical discourse about the variances in the ways individuals see and experience the world. Wayne Au responded to this call with the first edition of Rethinking Multicultural Education: Teaching for Racial and Cultural Justice published in 2009. Now, in the second edition, Au (2014) has set out to expand the conversation regarding multicultural education by compiling both moving and thought-provoking articles inspired by the nonprofit magazine and advocacy organization, Rethinking Schools.
