Survey Methodology

This month's survey of the 2012 Greenest CRE Companies captured information from a wide variety of firms on their environmental sustain-ability and energy resource stewardship. The focus of the survey was to determine which firms have made an initial and ongoing commitment by investing time, staff and corporate culture in a way that will help them gain a leadership position in the commercial real estate sector. Sustainability, in our view, isn't about scale alone but a combination of effort, quality of result and future commitment. With that in mind, we reviewed the submissions and selected the rankings after looking at such factors as the types of properties owned, whether or not the firm had a dedicated chief sustainability officer and staff trained in sustainability, concentration of LEED certifications, areas of focus on energy and resource improvement, results in utility cost reductions, and other similar metrics.
