The KNRM (Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution) is an unsubsidized organization responsible for search and rescue (SAR) activities in Dutch waters, including the North Sea, up to 200 nautical miles from shore. In 2009, the assurance company Noordhollandsche van 1816 wanted to sponsor a new vessel, and the opportunity to develop a next-generation lifeboat was born: Project 1816.
