Optimization is a powerful tool to help naval architects transform increasingly complex numerical engineering models into a better understanding of the design space and improved design performance. The use of formal numerical optimization within marine design has now become commonplace for a wide range of vessels, addressing resistance, seakeeping, structural weight, and producibility. This growth in use has been mirrored by a rapid growth within the optimization community, with new optimization formulations and design strategies appearing regularly. Our purpose here will be to briefly review and contrast several of the more established approaches for optimization.
