There are precious few times when I have a serious disagreement with Mitch Schneider on an issue of importance to the industry. So when it happens, I think it's rather important to explore why. You see, Mitch recently wrote about a group of lawyers in California who are using the legal system to, what they would say, "Serve Justice," but what from a different viewpoint looks a whole lot like legalized extortion. You may have heard what they do by now: These lawyers go into honest shops and look for trifling violations of the California Bureau of Automotive Repair's (BAR) regulations. Then they basically create a situation where the business owner has to "settle" and pay a fine, or go to court and spend thousands of dollars defending themselves.
