Allison Engine Company was incorporated in 1915 to design and produce components for Indy racing engines. In the early 1920s, it began making significant improvements to existing aircraft engine designs. When acquired by GM in 1928, the company already was designing the engine shown here. The V1710 was a V12 with four valves per cylinder (each with its own port) that developed 1,500 hp at 3,000 rpm. During WWII, the V1710 was used in U.S. fighters, bombers, experimental aircraft and PT boats. After the war, Allison went on to produce jet engines and a variety of successful turboshaft/turboprop engines for civilian and military aircraft and helicopters.
