New High for Steel Production

Global crude steel output rose by an estimated 15% in 2010 to an new annual high of 1,414 Mt, according to full year data from the World Steel Association. This was the biggest ever annual rise in production volumes and, in turn, supported record rises in seaborne iron ore and coking coal trade. As the accompanying chart shows, all of the main producing regions registered substantial increases last year as output rebounded in the mature economies after the traumas of late 2008 and 1hO9, while China and India maintained their long term upward trend. The sharpest rebound was in the US, but Western Europe, Japan and South Korea also saw year-on-year rises of more than 20%.
