Preliminary data for 2012 fleet additions and removals show that, excluding ships below 10,000dwt, the oil tanker fleet (dirty and clean) grew by a net 20.24mdwt last year. This constituted a sharp slowdown from net growth of 29.10mdwt in 2011 and resulted from a) lower volumes of new ship deliveries, plus b) heightened scrapping of older tonnage. By comparison, growth of the dry bulk carrier fleet slowed to 64.4mdwt, compared to the 76.8mdwt gain registered in 2011.
