Contrasting with the pattern of recent years, the month of June has brought a firming in spot rates across all of the main vessel sizes with the Baltic Exchange Dry Index rising by over 30% during the first half of the month. Without a dramatic near-term reversal, the BDI is on course for its strongest June average since 2011. Furthermore, both FFA prices and short period rates suggest that these latest gains do not represent a short-lived spike but signal a period of generally firmer rates during the second half of 2018.
