Wabtec Rail Scotland builds on plant's roots

The former Hunslet-Barclay facility at Kilmarnock in Scotland became part of the Wabtec Group when Wabtec purchased Brush Traction in February 2011. Brush had bought the Scottish business in 2007 and from then until the Wabtec acquisition the company was known as Brush Barclay. The company has a long history. Andrew Barclay started in business in 1839 manufacturing lift shafts and then gas lamps, before he moved into the production of winding engines for the local coal mining industry in 1847. Financial problems brought the business to an end but he fought back and in 1859 his new company produced its first steam engine.
