Two days before the start of the 2012 London Olympic Games passengers on a delayed early morning West Coast service from Glasgow to London speeding through the Lake District heard a PA announcement reassuring all those '.. .heading for the rehearsal for the opening ceremony'that they would be in London in plenty of time. Suddenly it was very real, and clear that the part the railways would play in supporting the Games was a national challenge and not something limited to London or the South East.
