Whitby could see its present four return train services per day doubled in frequency from 2016 - including a much needed early morning and a late night service - if the North Yorks National Park grants planning permission for a potash mine near Whitby at the end of July. York Potash has proposed funding of £1.5million over three years to deliver an enhanced new year-round service on the Esk Valley line from Middlesbrough to Whitby. The additional services would coincide with shift change times at the proposed mine in the early morning, in the afternoon and the evening.
