It's not easy to describe the merchandise found in any of Consolidated Stores' 1,166 stores. They sell everything from clothing to tools to ceramics. Consolidated Stores (headquartered in Columbus, Ohio) purchases overstocked merchandise from a wide variety of sources, then sells the items at close-out prices. Consolidated recentlypadded its third distribution center in Montgomery, Ala. Before building the 1.2 million sq ft facility, stores in the southeastern states were serviced from the Columbus DC. Trucking items over a thousand miles proved costly, plus growth of the chain put added pressure on Columbus to meet distribution demands.
