How local television news has changed over the past thirty years: An examination of the influences of money, technology and personnel choices in the daily broadcast of local TV news.

This study focuses on three areas that play a major role in how newscasts are assembled and examines how these areas have evolved since television's beginnings, but primarily focused on the last thirty years. They are: money, technology and personnel. Each one of these forces have altered the substance of local TV news and dramatically changed the way it is broadcast each night by affecting the story choices that are made, the way the story is reported and who reports the story. Each one of these areas can affect a local TV newscast in both overt and subtle ways. To accomplish this examination the major texts are consulted, but a large part of the research conducted for this thesis is derived from personal interviews conducted with a number of former news directors in the TV news industry.
