Bar code labels ease stores' returns problem

Seventeen JACKS Discount stores in the Midwest, owned by Penn-Daniels, all return their defective merchandise to a single 480,000 sq ft distribution center. But Penn-Daniels found that these defective goods weren't always returned in a timely manner. Nor were they correctly identified when returned. So Penn-Daniels lost money on credits or refunds from the manufacturers of the defective items because it couldn't return them in time to meet the manufacturers' deadlines.
