For Kunzler and Co., being good enough was no longer good enough. "We were and are a manufacturer of quality meats," says Steve Lewis, director of logistics for Kunzler with facilities in Lancaster and Tyrone, Pa. "But not much attention was paid to the distribution side of the business. It was more of a necessity." Today, Kunzler has a completely redesigned 30,000 square foot distribution center that relies on a new warehouse management system (Catalyst) capable of lot tracking and first in/first out (FIFO) rotation—both essential to managing food products with a limited shelf life. The result was a 15% increase in space utilization, reduced off-site storage, improved labor efficiency and a 90% reduction in expenses due to mis-rotated product. By Lewis' own accounting, order fulfillment processes are now as strong as the company's manufacturing systems.
