Theynencode well-known reporter genes that cannbe measured by fluorescence microscopynor by direct colorimetric staining. Four dif-nferent marker viruses are available, and allncan infect a wide variety of dividing and non-ndividing cell types, but because they lack thenE1 gene, they replicate only in E1 trans-com-nplementing cells such as HEK 293.
