Labs, workshops, standards; it's all happening in 5G, suddenly. But what's the rush? Many markets, including most of Europe, are only just getting acquainted with 4G LTE. The next generation of radio access technology is a way off. Surely operators would do better to sweat their assets, than talk up new tricks? The current excitement is perhaps, in part, because vendors need to re-spin their commercial cycles, for the big-ticket sale of radio equipment at least. "In order to keep up interest, momentum, and the perception of being innovative, a lot of vendors are making the most of 5G," remarks Sylvain Fabre, research director at Gartner.
