Businesses to back turbo charged devo

The business lobby has given its backing to 'turbo charged' devolution, the director general of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) told a Core Cities seminar last week. Following the response to the pandemic, Dame Carolyn Fairbairn said businesses have 'hugely valued the power of local government'. 'You will hear a CBI voice backing the idea of greater devolution during this period. We have seen the power of local delivery on PPE, on dispersal of funding and this is a moment, we think, to go further…this is a moment to really turbo charge devolution.' While she admitted the business community had been 'somewhat ambivalent' to devolution in the past, Dame Carolyn stated: 'That has changed. I think we have seen the power of local decision-making and we will be absolutely backing that.' She assured the Core Cities audience: 'We are going to be pushing, as the CBI, for a devolution framework this autumn.
