The Department for Communities and Local Government this week confirmed it had delayed publication of its final shortlist for eco towns, amid growing concerns that some projects were facing severe difficulties. Amid claims that the number of eco towns could be scaled back, however, a CLG spokesman told The MJ that ministers still intended to build 10. 'We have no intention of reducing the number of towns we plan to build, which still stands at 10,' he said. Ministers will now publish their final list of proposed towns in 2009 and not in October, as originally intended. The decision comes amid growing concern over some of the 16 shortlisted projects. Projects in Norfolk, north Yorkshire and Cambridgeshire face serious challenges. The site in Norfolk has been confirmed as a potential home to a new prison - a move which casts doubt on the eco town's viability.
