There has been much press coverage recently concerning the proposed Audit Commission's fee increase for local government (The MJ, 6 December 2007). In local government, we can all appreciate the ever-increasing burden of new responsibilities and duties. The Audit Commission quotes a number of these, which it cites as justification for the fee increase. In respect of my own district council, we have always strived to produce value for money for our residents, and have a robust corporate and financial strategy system to deliver our objectives and incorporate the achievement of annual efficiency savings.
