CPA stars fail to dazzle minister

Councils are getting better, according to latest league tables - but local government minister, John Healey, has upped the ante by demanding councils be even more efficient. As the Audit Commission unveiled the latest CPA league tables, showing four out of five councils are in the top two Comprehensive Performance Assessment categories, Mr Healey said councils were delivering 'more and more', backed by 'more resources from central government'. But, he added: 'The report also does its job in showing areas where councils need to improve services and cut waste further. 'Councils must look for further improvements and efficiency, not because ministers say so, but because it frees up cash which can be used to improve services or reduce pressure on council tax bills in the interests of local people.'
