No movement on rates has councils in a lather

Councils have reacted with anger after the Government refused to allow them to move £300m of business rates relief between years. In a letter to council leaders, seen by The MJ, local government minister Marcus Jones said there were 'no plans to allow end-of-year flexibility with regard to this year's allocations'. Mr Jones' confirmation came more than four months after the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) raised hopes councils would be allowed to transfer small underspends between years.
