'Collaborate to reduce deficits' Government tells pensions forum

Greater collaboration is needed between members of the Local Government Pensions Scheme (LGPS) and other institutional funds to reduce spiralling deficits and the impact of low interest rates and quantitative easing, a leading pensions expert has claimed. Dr Ros Altmann, who is the Government's older workers business champion, told the London Pension Fund's member forum last week a new approach was needed to tackle increasing pensions liabilities - which some industry figures have estimated as at least £50bn among LGPS funds. 'There is a real need for more creative investment solutions, for example smaller funds coming together with larger funds to invest on a collective, active basis,' Dr Altmann told more than 500 members of the LPFA's £4bn pension fund.
