The Chancellor of the Exchequer has announced that he is seeking a further £20bn of savings in public spending from government departments as part of his austerity drive. This is to be achieved from efficiency savings, privatisation and other areas, achieving 'more for less' as an outcome. This may be following the Dartford River Crossing model, where privatisation was implemented under the coalition government. More recently, there has been substantial investment in the order of £62m in a new road layout and automatic charging system similar to the London congestion charge, according to the Highways Agency.
