Manchester, like the rest of the country, is facing a major challenge to update a health and social care system which was designed around seventy years ago - when infectious diseases were the main risk to health. It was also a time when the majority of health services were provided from within a hospital. Fast forward to today and the biggest threats are now chronic diseases - such as heart disease, cancer, respiratory conditions and other illnesses which patients can live with, often for many years. Alongside this, advances in technology and in clinical practice mean there is now much more scope to care for patients outside a hospital setting.
