The dramatic demise of Kids Company came as a shock to many, including, most importantly, the children who benefited from its services. The doors were slammed shut amid claims of financial mismanagement, child abuse and nepotism. Within days news emerged that another leading charity dealing with children had also shut down. The British Association for Adoption and Fostering, which worked with councils placing children where they could not be found suitable local families, had run out of cash. Local Government Association spokesman Cllr David Simmonds confirmed that Kids Company worked with some children who were also cared for by councils, although in the small number of areas where it had contracts with local authorities or were otherwise active, it did not provide statutory services.
