A unique challenge in social care is being offered to the right candidate by London Borough of Havering.The north-east London borough is seeking to appoint a principal social worker who will take responsibility for both children and adults. Initially, for approximately 18 months, the post holder will be focused on children's care while the responsibilities for adult social care required by the Care Act bed down. Thereafter, says Joy Hollister, Group Director for Children, Adults, Housing and Public Health, the role expands to encompass adults. 'We will be the first authority in the country with a principal social care role that covers all age groups,' she says. 'A key challenge will be to see how we make best use of the synergies that arise across the age groups.' Havering is the largest London borough by area and has a population of a quarter of a million. There is a mix of both affluence and deprivation and an ongoing migration of young people and families from inner London creates a range of challenges. Meanwhile, the borough has the largest proportion of people over 85 in the capital. 'So,' says Ms Hollister, 'we are pressured at both ends of the age scals.'
