I had a sepia-tinted daydream in which the roll-out of broadband was transposed to the 1950s. It went something like: Minister: How are we going to make sure everybody can get this new internet thingy? Civil servant: It will mean running newfangled wiring out into the countryside. Minister: What's it going to cost? Civil servant:... Many thousands of pounds. Minister: Get on to the GPO and tell them to get it done.
