Smith report prompts race for devolution

'English votes for English laws' is less important than getting the right deal for communities, the local government associations have told William Hague. In the aftermath of the publication of the Smith Commission report into Scottish devolution, there has been a raft of calls for further devolution. The four UK associations - the Local Government Association, Welsh Local Government Association, Northern Ireland Local Government Association and the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities -met with Mr Hague, who is chairing a commission the impact of devolution on the rest of the UK. Speaking to The MJ after the meeting, LGA chair Cllr David Sparks said there were 'differing views' on the issue of English votes for English laws, but there was a consensus that it was 'less important than devolving down to our communities'.
