LGA jobs lost to DWP staff

Civil servants at the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will be handed the first opportunity to secure posts created to administer the Universal Credit (UC) - at the expense of council housing-benefit staff. The Local Government Association (LGA) lamented that the situation has arisen because council staff lack job-transfer protection. Discussing welfare reforms at a meeting of the LGA Executive on 17 May, Cllr Stephen Houghton, leader of Barnsley MBC, said DWP staff who are suitably skilled and qualified would transfer to whichever organisation is responsible for delivering UC, while town hall workers doing very similar jobs do not have the right to join them.
