Some people maintain that public service managers lack the appetite to make the size of spending and workforce cuts required to meet budgets and are unable to make the necessary radical changes. They argue that the answer is to fire the reluctant public sector managers and install interim managers to get the job done. This must not go unchallenged in the rush to praise private sector expertise because what is conveniently over looked is that public sector management is not just about the bottom line: it also requires political sensitivity.
