Councils face £11 bn cut in funds over next four years, warns LGA

Local authorities will have to reduce annual spending by £11bn over the course of the next four years, it has been suggested. The Local Government Association (LGA) made the calculation based on assumed cuts likely to be inflicted on councils.LGA director of finance, Stephen Jones, has called for a combined effort across public services to weather the storm. Local authorities currently spend around £105bn a year, but additional demographic pressures mean this figure will need to rise to £110bn by 2013/14.
