With developments such as the Thames Gateway taking place, it has become increasingly apparent that the sustainable communities agenda has a massive impact on people's lives, as it means changes to the places where people live and work. The development of new communities and enhancing existing ones, whether they are large or small, urban or rural, can and does transform how local citizens, local companies, local charities and local public services go about their daily business. A great deal of progress has already been made towards the goal of creating more attractive, vibrant, safe communities with a sense of place where people want to live, but many questions still remain: 1. Are we building enough houses in the right places? 2. Are there enough schools, hospitals and roads to support building more homes? 3. What about the environmental impact? 4. What about the feelings of local residents? 5. Are councils and government departments doing a good job?
