Prof Michael West is a world class academicand infl uencer and his work has had aprofoundly important impact in the NHS.Michael’s work on compassion isn’t justrelevant to the NHS however. In thinkingabout the qualities we would like to seefl ourish in our future work and lives, I can’tthink any of us would argue that we alreadyhave enough.While reading this NHS-focused article, bearin mind that the term ‘NHS’ can simply bereplaced with ‘local public services’. We aresure it will resonate very strongly:‘The NHS was founded on the core value ofcompassion and a commitment to providingcare for those who need it, regardless of status,wealth, ethnicity, age, gender. All NHS staffmake the decision to dedicate a major partof their precious lives to caring for others intheir communities. Their motivation and effortwill be at maximum therefore when theywork in organisations where the core value iscompassion.
