Guidance will help councils deal with schools grant

Councils will not be requiredto put aside money from theirgeneral reserves to supportfuture funding of any dedicatedschools grant (DSG) deficit,new guidance has confirmed.The Chartered Institute ofPublic Finance and Accountancysaid its guidance did not createa precedent for or supportthe voluntary earmarking ofdeficit balances within generalreserves.It comes as councils havewarned they are strugglingto deliver statutory supportfor children with specialeducational needs anddisabilities (SEND) due todealing with the demands ofcoronavirus.
