Peer review response 'vital for LGA future'

The true test of the Local Government Association (LGA) will be how it responds to its peer review, according to the member who pushed for the inspection. LGA Labour Group leader Jim McMahon told The MI: 'It's great it has been done. It's been well managed and well received but the real test is what we do with it.' The report claims there is sometimes frustration at the LGA for failing to speak out about failings in services or councils. 'There is a desire from some members for the LGA to express clearer stances on difficult issues.' However, it acknowledges that as a member organisation, it is difficult for the association to take a stance. The LGA released the final draft of the report this week, six weeks after the initial findings were reported back on 21 January. It has already begun to address some of the criticisms in the review.
